Recap: Boise State vs. Colorado State
Boise, ID (SportsNetwork.com) - Grant Hedrick threw for 352 yards and Jay Ajayi rushed 219 yards, as the Boise State Broncos cruised to a 37-24 victory over the Colorado State Rams in a Mountain West Conference affair at Bronco Stadium.
Hedrick completed 22-of-33 passes with two touchdowns and an interception while adding 80 rushing yards and another score for Boise State (1-1, 1-0 MWC). Ajayi, who accounted for three touchdowns, did his rushing damage on 33 carries while also catching four passes for 61 yards. Matt Miller rounded out a prolific offensive night for the Broncos with eight receptions for 151 yards and a score.
For Colorado State (1-1, 0-1), Garrett Grayson was 31-of-58 passing for a career-high 434 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Joe Hansley (seven receptions, 149 yards, TD) and Rashard Higgins (11 receptions, 143 yards) both benefited from Grayson's big game.
The Rams got the scoring started on the game's first possession, when an eight-play, 51-yard drive ended in a 39-yard field goal by Jared Roberts.
The Broncos responded on their first drive when Ajayi ran in a score from eight yards out. The score remained 6-3 after the extra point was blocked.
Boise State extended its lead later in the quarter when Hedrick scored on a one-yard run, but Colorado State answered back less than two minutes later on a 24-yard scoring strike from Grayson to Steven Walker. The Broncos held a 13-10 advantage after a busy opening frame.
Ajayi added another rushing score early in the second quarter, this time from 14 yards out, as Boise State once again held a 10-point lead, 20-10.
Ajayi's huge game continued with under two minutes to play in the half when he caught a 21-yard touchdown from Hedrick, and after a Colorado State turnover, Boise State added a 23-yard field goal off the foot of Dan Goodale just before intermission to give it a comfortable 30-10 advantage.
Boise State held its largest lead of the game, 37-10, after Hedrick tossed a 44-yard touchdown to Miller late in the third quarter.
After 24 unanswered points by the Broncos, the Rams finally put an end to the run early in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard touchdown hookup between Grayson and Hansley.
The Rams made things interesting with 7:20 left in the game as they cut their deficit to two scores, 37-24, following Grayson's third touchdown pass, this one to Jasen Oden, Jr. from seven yards out, although that would be the game's final score.
Boise State racked up 676 yards and went 7-of-14 on third-down conversions, which helped mask a game-high 10 penalties for 101 yards.Game Notes
