Boise, ID (SportsNetwork.com) - Jay Ajayi ran for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Grant Hedrick passed for 190 yards and another score as the Boise State Broncos held on down the stretch to defeat the Fresno State Bulldogs, 37-27, in a Mountain West Conference showdown at Albertsons Stadium Friday night.

Hedrick completed 21-of-30 passing, rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries and caught a nine-yard scoring pass, while Ajayi took a team-high 30 carries for Boise State (5-2, 3-1 MWC). Shane Williams-Rhodes hauled in four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown in the win, which was the second in a row for the Broncos.

Marteze Waller carried the ball 18 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns, and added three receptions for 12 yards for Fresno State (3-5, 2-2), which has lost two games in a row. Brian Burrell completed 13-of-25 passing for 127 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He was also sacked five times by Boise State.

Ajayi put the Broncos ahead with a nine-yard touchdown run just under six minutes into the contest. Boise State took the 7-0 advantage, but a few minutes later Kody Kroening connected on a 34-yard field goal for Fresno State to cut the Boise lead to 7-3 with 5:22 to play in the first quarter.

Dan Goodale answered with a 34-yard field goal of his own with 2:50 to play in the first period, which gave the Broncos the 10-3 advantage.

But just 18 seconds later, Waller broke free for a 76-yard touchdown run that knotted the score at 10-10 with about 2:30 left in the frame.

Goodale gave Boise State the lead once again with 17 seconds to play in the first quarter when he connected on a 40-yard field goal try.

It took almost seven full minutes into the second quarter for a team to strike again. Ajayi punched in his second score of the game on a three-yard run with 8:25 left in the half that capped a 10-play drive. The Broncos took the 20-10 advantage.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter on a high note, slashing the Boise State lead to 20-17 when Josh Harper hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Burrell. Fresno State needed just two plays on the 75-yard scoring drive that ended with 14:23 left to play in the third.

But the Broncos added some insurance room with 9:13 left to play in the period when Hedrick found Williams-Rhodes on a 21-yard scoring pass play to cap a 12- play drive. Boise State went back up by 10, 27-17.

Two consecutive scores for the Bulldogs tied the score up at 27 apiece. First, Kroening booted through a 44-yard field goal with 2:41 left in the third quarter, and then Waller carried the ball for a three-yard score with 1:57 to play in the frame following a Boise State turnover.

The contest was tied until a little Boise State trickery put the Broncos ahead with 9:11 left in the game. A double reverse in the backfield ended up in Thomas Sperbeck's hands, who threw a nine-yard loft to a wide open Hedrick for the touchdown. The score capped a 17-play drive that ate up 7:46 off the clock. Boise State retook the lead, 34-27.

With 1:41 left to play in the game, Goodale pounded through a 24-yard field goal to give his Broncos a 37-27 advantage. An interception on Fresno State's next drive sealed the team's loss.

Boise State had the decided edge offensively, gaining 24 first downs to Fresno State's 12, and outgaining the Bulldogs, 492 offensive yards to 313. The Broncos held possession of the ball for over nine minutes more than Fresno State, 35:33 to 24:27.
