Recap: Hawaii vs. Washington

Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - John Ross ran in for a score on a reverse and hauled in a 91-yard TD catch as No. 25 Washington held off Hawaii, 17-16, in head coach Chris Petersen's Huskies debut on Saturday night.

Washington ran the final 2:40 off the clock to hang on for the victory despite having to punt on eight of their nine possessions in the second half.

Petersen was hired by Washington in December after he spent the last eight years at Boise State where he compiled a 92-12 mark.

Jeff Lindquist was just 10-of-26 for 162 yards and a touchdown in his first start, replacing Cyler Miles due to suspension. Lavon Coleman carried the ball 17 times for 78 yards for the Huskies (1-0), who went 9-4 a year ago.

Joey Iosefa accounted for 143 yards rushing and a score on 30 totes for Hawaii (0-1).

The Warriors raced out to a 10-0 lead after scoring on each of their first two possessions.

Ikaika Woolsey, who was 23-of-42 for 207 yards, fired a 21-yard completion to Quinton Pedroza on a 3rd-and-16 before Iosefa capped off Hawaii's opening 10- play, 58-yard march with a 1-yard TD plunge.

Hawaii converted a pair of 3rd-and-shorts prior to moving the chains on a 4th- and-7 when Woolsey hit Scott Harding for seven yards. Woolsey then found Marcus Kemp for 13 more yards on a 3rd-and-12, but the drive stalled and Tyler Hadden booted through a 28-yard field goal to cap the mammoth 18-play, 79- yard march late in the first.

The Huskies responded with the next 17 points.

A penalty on Hawaii gave Washington a first down on a 3rd-and-12 on its ensuing series, which was concluded when Ross took his reverse 20 yards for a score.

Hawaii turned the ball over on downs via a trick play on a 4th-and-2 when Kemp took a reverse and landed his pass short of the tight end Harold Moleni in the end zone.

Washington struck on the very next play.

Lundquist heaved the ball downfield for Ross, who caught the pass and raced for the 91-yard score to put the Huskies in front, 14-10, early in the second.

Cameron Van Winkle added a 36-yard field goal on the Huskies' next sequence, while Hadden was off the mark for Hawaii from 40 yards away right before the half.

Hadden nailed a 38-yard field goal early in the third and booted through a 27- yarder early in the fourth to get Hawaii within 17-16 with 12:42 left.
