Recap: South Alabama vs. ULM
Mobile, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ross Metheny accounted for 322 total yards and four touchdowns as the South Alabama Jaguars took down the ULM Warhawks, 36-14, in Sun Belt Conference action at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Metheny completed 15-of-26 passes for 194 yards with three touchdowns and an interception while also rushing for 128 yards and a score for South Alabama (4-6, 2-3 Sun Belt), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Shavarez Smith tallied three catches for 90 yards and a touchdown for the home team.
For ULM (5-6, 3-3), Kolton Browning threw for 196 yards on 18-of-26 passing and scored two touchdowns -- one passing and one rushing. Rashon Ceaser led all receivers with nine receptions for 138 yards and a score to give him three straight 100-yard games.
South Alabama got off to a 6-0 lead after one quarter following a pair of field goals by Aleem Sunanon, one a 43-yarder and the other from 45 yards out.
ULM struck back early in the second quarter when it capped off an 11-play, 80- yard drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown by Browning to take a 7-6 lead.
South Alabama regained the advantage a few minutes later when Metheny and Smith hooked up for a 29-yard touchdown, although the game remained 12-7 following a failed PAT.
The Jaguars struck again late in the first half, as Metheny connected with Jereme Jones for a five-yard scoring strike to give them a 19-7 advantage heading into intermission.
The Warhawks scored on their first drive of the second half when Browning teamed up with Ceaser on a 44-yard touchdown, but South Alabama kept pace later in the frame when Ryan Onkka caught a two-yard touchdown toss from Metheny.
The Jaguars extended their advantage to 15 points early in the fourth quarter after Sunanon knocked through a 34-yard field goal. They put the game further out of reach with 3:30 remaining when Metheny rushed in a 63-yard score.
Despite losing the time of possession battle, South Alabama still made 25 first downs, compared to only 14 for ULM.Game Notes
