Recap: Navy vs. South Alabama
Annapolis, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Keenan Reynolds threw for a touchdown and rushed for another, helping the Navy Midshipmen defeat the South Alabama Jaguars, 42-14, in the first-ever meeting between the two sides at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Reynolds threw for 168 yards and also carried the ball 17 times for an additional 59 yards for the Midshipmen (6-4). Darius Staten ran for 127 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Matt Aiken caught two passes for 50 yards and a score.
Ross Metheny completed 18-of-27 pass attempts, good for 160 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars (3-6). Shavarez Smith caught both of those touchdowns and tallied 65 yards on five receptions.
The Midshipmen opened the game's scoring midway through the first quarter on a Nick Sloan field goal from 37 yards out.
The Jaguars responded in the final minute of the quarter on a four-yard touchdown pass from Metheny to Smith to take a 7-3 lead.
Navy grabbed back the lead early in the second quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by Staten.
Four minutes later, Smith hauled in his second touchdown reception on a 22-yard pass from Metheny, giving the Jaguars a 14-10 advantage.
The South Alabama lead was short-lived, however, as the Midshipmen had a seven-yard touchdown run by Shawn White only two minutes later to reclaim the lead, 17-14
Sloan converted another field goal, this one from 21 yards, in the final minute of the first half, extending the Navy lead to 20-14.
Navy opened the second-half scoring a few minutes into the third quarter on a one-yard rushing score by Reynolds, taking the score to 27-14.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Navy put the game out of reach on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Reynolds to Aiken. Reynolds completed the two-point conversion on another pass to Aiken, taking the Midshipmen ahead, 35-14.
Finishing off the game's scoring was a 24-yard touchdown run by Navy's Tago Smith with two minutes left, making it a convincing 42-14.
The Midshipmen took control of the game by establishing a strong running game, which totaled 351 yards.Game Notes
