Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - West Virginia sophomore guard Eron Harris has asked for his release and plans to transfer, men's head basketball coach Bob Huggins announced Monday.

Harris appeared in all 33 games, including 32 starts, for the 17-16 Mountaineers this past season. He averaged 17.2 points per contest, good for second on the team behind only Juwan Staten's 18.1 points per game.

"I have enjoyed my time at West Virginia University the past two years, but I want to transfer closer to home," Harris said in a statement released by the school. "I want to be closer to my family, especially being around my little brother."

Harris led the team with 89 made 3-pointers and finished the season shooting 42.2 percent (89-of-211) from beyond the arc.

"We have enjoyed Eron and his contributions to Mountaineer basketball," Huggins said. "Of all people, I certainly know what it is like to be closer to family and friends, that's why I did it as a student-athlete then as a coach."

West Virginia's season ended last Tuesday following a 77-65 loss to Georgetown in the first round of the NIT.
