Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Houston men's basketball coach James Dickey has resigned after four seasons.

The school said Monday that Dickey was stepping down "due to private family matters."

Dickey, hired in April of 2010, led Houston to a 64-62 record -- including a 17-16 mark this season after the Cougars transferred from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference.

They beat three Top-25 teams for the first time in 30 years.

In a statement, Dickey called the resignation "a difficult decision to make."

"I continually preach to my players about being an everyday guy, and the balance of your personal and professional life is a major part of it. With that being said, I have a family matter that requires my time and energy," Dickey said.

Houston athletic director Mack Rhoades said Dickey's resignation came "with great heartache for all involved."

"He made so many of us in our department better," said Rhoades. "No one has worked harder than coach Dickey, and he leaves the Houston men's basketball program in a much better place."

Rhoades said a search for Dickey's replacement would begin immediately.
