Judge Declines to Revoke Bond for MS Sheriff
PASCAGOULA, MS (AP) - Judge William Coleman issued the ruling Monday after a hearing in Jackson County. District Attorney Tony Lawrence wanted Byrd be held in contempt of court and his bond revoked on 31 criminal charges. Lawrence alleged Byrd contacted and intimidated witnesses who testified against him before a grand jury.Byrd's attorney, Joe Sam Owen, admits Byrd contacted the witnesses, but said he was doing so to assist attorneys in his own defense. Byrd has pleaded not guilty.
While Byrd had contact with the witnesses, who also were his employees, Coleman said he considered it a minor incident. Coleman told Owens to advise Byrd again about having contract with people involved in the criminal case.
