GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Sheriff Brisolara said that someone who knows how to do it can pull it off as quickly as eight seconds. Since 2008 there have been 243 attempted suicides and six suicides in the Harrison County Jail. The sheriff says an inmate who committed suicide recently had been checked on just 40 minutes before he was found hanging from his bed.

The only way Brisolara thinks officers can do a better job is if deputies can get a complete medical history on every inmate. If an inmate is considered suicidal, the sheriff says guards check on them every 10 minutes.
