Former Jackson County Sheriff, Mike Byrd, was sentenced to six months of house arrest, followed by six months of probation. He has also been ordered to pay a $3,000 fine after pleading guilty to a federal charge of witness tampering. Judge William Steele handed down the sentence is United States District Court in Mobile, Alabama. The former four term sheriff admitted to kicking a handcuffed man in the groin. The suspect, John Mark Stahl, was taken into custody after stealing a deputy's patrol car that led to a chase. The pursuit of the vehicle ended in Mobile County in June of 2012. Byrd also faces a state charge Thursday in Pascagoula of intimidating a witness. Jackson County District Attorney, Tony Lawrence, has recommended a sentence of one and a half years of house arrest with three years of supervision and a $2,000 fine.
