When the Gulfport Fire Department wasn't busy responding to calls Friday, they were helping serve food at a fish fry. The Department of Veteran Affairs hosted the fish fry to benefit the fire department. The food was served in the D.A.V. Chapter Five building in downtown Gulfport from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They offered delivery, take out, or dine in options to enjoy a plate of fish, coleslaw, baked beans, and a roll.
Lonnie Necaise, the Battalion Chief for the Gulfport Fire Department, says, “We were actually invited down by the D.A.V. today, after we heard they were going to put on an annual fish fry for the fire department to benefit our Benevolence Fund and our Firemen's Ball that we do every year. So we sent a few guys out to kind of help them out in the kitchen and we've got them back there in the back working away.” The fish fry was so popular that there was a 30 minute wait for food. Over 100 orders came through within the first hour as firefighters bustled in the kitchen.
