Ken Broadus, the Acting Sheriff of Jackson County, says, "I'm the senior officer of the county. The chief deputy is number two right behind the sheriff.” Chief Deputy Broadus is the Acting Sheriff after Mike Byrd's resignation two weeks ago and he feels the transition would be easy after years with the Sheriff's Office. Broadus also says, “Because of that, it was a natural flow to go right into it. It's been a work in progress since I joined the Sheriff's Department, which was 25 years ago.” Twenty two men are on the list of candidates, and most are officers in Jackson County. Bruce Lynd, a candidate for the position of Interim Sheriff, says, “I ran last in 2011 for Sheriff of Jackson County, and I saw then that it was time for change for Jackson County and we needed some new leadership in Jackson County.” Lynd has been in law enforcement for 20 years and has run against former Sheriff Byrd. Lynd says he’s not surprised by the high interest in the interim position. Lynd also says, “Doesn’t surprise me at all. Again, I anticipate even more than that, around that amount, or maybe even more around the election, especially the election of 2014.”

While most people on the list are active law enforcement, there are a few retired or former police who see this as a golden opportunity. Randy Bosarge, another candidate for Interim Sheriff, says, “I was Deputy Sheriff from 1982 to 1998, and in 1999 I put my career on hold to run for the Office of Sheriff in 1999.” Bosarge says he wanted to be Sheriff since he was 21 years old. He worked alongside Byrd before he was elected Sheriff, and says he's now ready to pick up his old badge, after working for 12 years as a builder. Bosarge also says, “For the last 12 years, I’ve been on the outside looking in, and looking in don’t look too good.” The Board of Supervisors will appoint an Interim Sheriff on January 6th, and candidates agree that the supervisors will have their hands full selecting one name from the list of qualified personnel. The Board of Supervisors have narrowed the list of candidates down to four people. They are: Charles Britt, Louis Gary Miller, Jack R. Walker Jr., and Michael Whitmore.
