A typical shopping day on Black Friday involves stores packed with people looking for those deals, but these deals are for pets. Ed Evans, a new pet owner, says, "I'm looking for a dog. I've been thinking about getting one since I moved here about a year ago from London." Evans decided to wait until Black Friday to go to the Humane Society of South Mississippi to see if he could find that companion he's been looking for. Evans also says, "Yeah, I did it .Wasn't exactly what I was looking for when I got here, but she seems like a real sweetie." Black Friday deals exist almost everywhere, and that’s no different at the Humane Society in Gulfport, where they have deals on both dogs and cats. Joan Salisbury, a volunteer at the Humane Society, says, "We didn't want Black Friday to get away from us without getting in on the action."
Volunteers at the facility welcome Black Friday because of all the perspective owners that come looking for that special friend. Salisbury also says, "You expect a bigger crowd and you can tell by the lobby here, we usually don't have the extra seating and we usually don't have the desk here with someone manning it." People have taken notice of just how dedicated the employees and volunteers are. Evans says, "It’s the cleanest. It’s like a hospital. It really is an impressive facility.” The Humane Society of South Mississippi cares for almost 10,000 animals annually and less than half of those animals find homes.
