It was quiet outside the U.S. District Court this morning, but it was a much different story behind those walls as the five defendants made their initial appearances, flanked by their attorneys. Tim Holleman was one of them. He represents Tina Shumate. Holleman says, "They were putting on a little show, weren't they?"
The five defendants stood in front of the judge in handcuffs, but left here free on bond. The attorneys we talked to say they're already preparing for next week's arraignments. Holleman also says, "Yeah, this was an initial appearance, and then you're released on bond, and the next week will be an arraignment, where we'll enter a plea of not guilty on two counts.” Arthur Madden, attorney for Scott Walker, says, "We plan to enter a plea of not guilty next Wednesday, and we'll go from there." All five of the defendants were released on a 25 thousand dollar unsecured bond after Magistrate Robert Walker read them their rights and went over the charges each defendant faces. This is just the beginning of the court proceedings. Corban Gunn, attorney for Steve Walker, says, "I think it will be an interesting case. I think we need to as we do in our court system, withhold judgment until all the evidence is shown." Holleman states, "I think we'll get to the truth of the matter eventually. That's what trials are for." Arraignments are set for next Wednesday at the courthouse. All of the defendants are expected to plead not guilty.
