Ostrea says, "I hate to admit that I've got in this position several times, but I can't believe, can I say the amount? I only get 25 dollars. I will take it and use it, but you can't fill up half a sack with that." The federal government is trying to cut back food stamp costs to where they were before the recession hit in 2008. The rollback comes out to nearly 14 billion dollars in savings for the 2014 fiscal year. The result of these cuts: families of four are receiving about 40 dollars less in food stamps than before. Director of The Lord Is My Help food pantry in Ocean Springs, Barbara Ruddiman, says she's already seen a rise in families needing more assistance. Ruddiman says, "Everyone is tightening their belts enough as it is, and this is tightening their belts even more." The staff at The Lord Is My Help says they don't understand why the government would cut benefits right before the holiday season. Ruddiman also says, "We're already getting quite a lot more people through our food pantry than we've ever seen before, and we're going into the holidays and my shelves are lower on food now than ever before." Ruddiman says the recent cuts to federal assistance are trying to address issues with the support services, however, she says the end result instead, is going to hurt families. Ruddiman states, "Critical. You’re talking about children who won’t have food on the weekends. A number of family members are going to be going hungry just to make sure everyone else gets to eat." The pantry runs solely on donations and says if anyone would like to donate, it's very much appreciated. The Lord Is My Help is giving away 150 Thanksgiving baskets to Ocean Springs families in need this holiday season. If you'd like to donate, you can contact them at (228) 872-2331.
