The American Red Cross volunteers that respond so quickly in times of need were honored at an appreciation event Monday morning. Red Cross hosted an Honors Breakfast at the Island View Casino Monday morning to recognize volunteers and their many years of service. Nearly 1,900 volunteers serve with the Mississippi Red Cross and over 600 in south Mississippi alone. Organizers of the event say this is just a small way to say thank you.
Christine Delea, Biloxi Volunteer Organizer, says, "We wanted to show our volunteers how much we really appreciate them, which we really do. The Red Cross cannot exist without volunteers. They do so much. Every day, no matter if it's a holiday, weekend, after hours, it doesn't matter, so this was just one of our small ways of saying thank you." Organizers say they hosted the event in response to National Volunteer Week. There are nearly 400,000 Red Cross volunteers nationwide.
