BILOXI--Biloxi Junior High School hosted a School Resource Officer Conference the week of June 12.
Thursday, June 12 was the second day of the yearly conference. Officers policing Mississippi schools gathered to learn the latest in protecting students. Since the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn. of 2012, there have been 74 school shootings—the most recent being June 10 in Oregon. With a shooting almost every week, the officers are required to stay up-to-date to properly protect Mississippi students.
School Safety Director of the Mississippi Department of Education, Robert O. Laird, said, “It’s absolutely critical [that] every school is required to have crisis response plan that drives how they respond to crisis. The officers are responsible for drafting that plan, as well as doing the Comprehensive Safety School Assessment, and in Mississippi, SRO’s are the primary people who do this.”
More than 100 officers from around the state were in Biloxi attending the four day conference.
