An economic move is underway to create a more vibrant downtown Gulfport. Main street businesses have been meeting for the last two days to discuss the effort.

The plan is to build on the current attractions in the area, like the waterfront views, "walkability," dozens of restaurants, and historic buildings. Officials foresee a movie theater, more family entertainment, and an organic grocery store. Some of the needs they addressed were abandoned buildings and after dark security issues.

Johnny Olsen, the President of Main Street Gulfport, says, “The next step for our group is to take everything that we’ve heard over the last two days and really summarize that into actionable items and look at ways that we can implement both short term and long term goals.” Officials hope to also see more social events and projects in the arts.
