Congressman Steven Palazzo, (MS-4), responded to recent remarks made by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel in a preview of the president’s FY15 defense budget plan.
“This isn’t the first time the Obama Administration has tried to balance the budget on the backs of our men and women in uniform, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. My number one constitutional responsibility is providing for our nation’s defense. I will fight to kill any budget plan that fails to uphold that commitment, just as I successfully fought damaging and senseless sequester cuts over the past two years. No amount of cuts to our nation’s military will address the real driver of our debt and deficits: out-of-control mandatory spending.”
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Palazzo has also consistently fought Administration plans to reinstate the Base Realignment and Closure process (BRAC). In 2011, in his first hearing before the House Armed Services Committee as Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta called the 2005 BRAC a “mistake,” and said that it “didn't take into consideration all of the needs that had to be addressed, and in many cases it wound up costing a lot more.”
