In January 2014, the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (I.S.S.C.) adopted new regulations concerning all U.S. states that harvest and process oysters. Beginning in April 2014, all Mississippi oyster harvesters will be required to attend a free oyster seminar and obtain a training certificate before they can apply for a harvester’s license. This certificate will be valid for two years. Legal photo identification is required for the certificate. Licenses will not be issued without the training certificate.

The first seminar will be held at the Bolton Building meeting room, 1141 Bayview Avenue, Biloxi, March 10 at 3 p.m. and March 24 at 9 a.m. and is open to all oyster harvesters. The seminar will cover basic oyster handling, hygiene, and regulations involving harvesting practices.

The I.S.S.C. was formed in 1982 to foster and promote shellfish sanitation through the cooperation of state and federal control agencies, the shellfish industry and the academic community.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (M.D.M.R.) is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
