The Jackson County Board of Supervisors has awarded a bid contract to Caddell Construction for 26.5 million dollars to build a new jail, right next to the old one. Supervisor, John McKay, says the new jail is within the county's budget. A new, larger facility will help protect officers and inmates. McKay says, "It’s worth the effort. You could see all the Sheriff's Department personnel out here bragging about how great it was. We've got a much better facility that they can operate, much safer for them, safer for the prisoners, and a 10 million dollar savings for the tax payer." The jail will break ground in February and will take 14 to 16 months to complete.
