A mother and her child are lucky to be alive Monday night, after surviving an explosive car accident in Gulfport. Police say the woman and her child hit the gas tank of an 18 wheeler.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries and no fatalities. The wreck happened about 5:30 p.m. on Monday evening, during rush hour traffic, at the intersection of Highway 49 and Interstate 10. Police say the mother was merging onto the highway when she hit the tank of the truck. The woman and her child were transported to the hospital with no serious injuries. The driver of the truck was also uninjured.

Leonard Papania, Gulfport Chief of Police, says, “Removed passengers from the Lincoln, an adult female and a small child. Both were transported for minor injuries, and the driver of the 18 wheeler was removed and he appears to be in good shape also.”

The westbound side of I-10 is open, but only one lane.
