One reason the Chris McDaniel/Thad Cochran race has caught national attention is the attack ads backed by big money. One attack ad on McDaniel focuses on his history as a trial lawyer. The ad talks about McDaniel winning $25 million in one case.

The case the ad refers to is the one in which McDaniel pro bono defended Billy Jack McDaniel, his cousin. Billy was badly burned on the job, and with McDaniel as his lawyer, was able to win a personal injury suit, but Billy says what really happened in the case has been blown way out of proportion.

Billy Jack McDaniel says, “A TV ad said I made $25 million on one case. Chris McDaniel, personal injury trail lawyer, made $25 million on one case. Every news media in the world, or in the nation rather, was trying to write about me, so I said, ‘Let’s go to Mississippi and put a period on that, because I don’t have $25 million dollars, number one.’” Billy McDaniel told his story to a crowded Chris McDaniel supporter event Monday night.
