The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (M.D.M.R.) held a special meeting Thursday to discuss adding days to the recreational red snapper season.
The season runs from July 1st through July 9th. With only nine days to fish, many thought that tourism on the Coast would suffer, so the topic of Thursday’s session was to discuss the possibility of opening a statewide snapper season during the last three weekends in July. The motion passed and all weekends in July are officially added to the season.
Jamie Miller, the Executive Director of the M.D.M.R., says, "Well, it means that Mississippi, like other gulf states, cares about its fishermen, cares about its economy, and we're looking to make sure that we stay on a level playing field with the other gulf states.”
