Thursday night, WXXV FOX 25 hosted its 2nd Annual Search for a Superstar contest. Out of the 24 amazing contestants, one winner went home with a free trip to Los Angeles and $1,000 in cash. When LeKeisha Cotten heard about Fox 25's Search for a Superstar contest, she wasn't sure if she should enter.
Cotten says, "I was thinking to myself, ‘Maybe I should enter,’ then I thought, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t enter because I’m not a competition type girl, I’m not a performer. I’m more of a church singer, an inspirational singer,’ but my husband encouraged me. He motivated me and said, ‘At least go and try. It will be a great experience.’" Cotten's husband was right. She gave the performance of a lifetime, beating out 23 other contestants for the top spot, singing songs by legends like Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston.
Cotten says she found her voice after the loss of her mother. She says, "I discovered that I could sing when my mother passed away. I was nine years old and I sang at her funeral and I think that’s when it really hit me that that was something that I could do, that was something that resonates in me, something that comes out of me and it just goes into other people." Cotten went home to Gulfport with a $1,000 in cash, but is most excited about her trip to Los Angeles.
Cotten says, "I love to see people get on stage and use their gifts and their talents to bless others and sing and use their God given gifts, so I’m excited about it!" From all the people at News 25, congratulations LeKeisha, and keep on singing your song! LeKeisha is originally from the Delta just like our own Jennifer Tubwell.
