Traffic is being diverted from the I-110 Bridge across the Biloxi Bay.
The entire I-110 Bridge will shut down starting at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, June 2 until around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 3. The bridge will again close again during the same hours on the night of Tuesday, June 3 until the morning of Wednesday, June 4.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (M.D.O.T.) is recommending motorists that need to cross the Back Bay to use Highway 605 in Gulfport or Highway 609 in Ocean Springs.
The shutdown of the I-110 Bridge is all part of the M.D.O.T.’s 8.2 million dollar project to modernize the draw bridge.
The night of June 2, workers will be testing the draw bridge’s new motors and control panels.
M.D.O.T. officials say the draw bridge will be raised and lowered about forty times during the night to test all the new equipment.
The testing is important says Mike Harter, the Project Engineer for the construction, “…to make it more reliable. These moveable spans are very technical—very elaborate systems. The bridge is forty years old. We need to update it to modern day technology to make it more reliable. We’re going to tear out all the old motors and put in new mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components. And it’s going to make it a lot more reliable in the future.”
Future construction dates that will shut down the bridge again begin Sunday, June 15 through Thursday June 19. Be prepared to find an alternate route.
