Singing River Health System will co-sponsor an A.A.R.P. Driver Safety Program on July 15th, 2014 to help drivers 50 and older brush up on their skills behind the wheel. The program is designed to help adults stay safe on today’s roads, while also teaching them how to reduce traffic violations, crashes and chances for injuries.
The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ocean Springs Hospital Boardroom located at 3109 Bienville Blvd. The cost is $15 for A.A.R.P. members and $20 for non-members. Payment is due at start of class, payable to A.A.R.P. and includes a certificate and book. Participants must bring their driver’s license and A.A.R.P. card to receive the member’s discount. They will receive an A.A.R.P. Drivers Safety Program certificate upon completion of the program.
Class participants will learn about current rules of the road, as well as how to adjust to common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Specifically, participants will learn about:
•Maintaining proper following distance at all times;
•The safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections;
•The effects of medications on driving;
•Minimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots;
•Limiting driver distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use;
•Properly using safety belts, air bags, and anti-lock brakes;
•Maintaining physical flexibility;
•Continuing to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities.
The class is designed for ages 50 and above, however, anyone may take the class. Completing this class may qualify participants for a discount on their auto insurance, though attendees should check with their insurance provider to verify eligibility.
Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, call 228-809-5000 or sign-up online at mysrhs.com.
