The wheels are now in motion on the Gulfport High School construction project. The vote Tuesday night to approve a bond to fund the project passed 82 to 18 percent. Gulfport residents and officials celebrated once the unofficial numbers came in Tuesday night. Now, the Gulfport School Board will vote.

Glen East, the Superintendent of the Gulfport School District, says, “In the end, I think we'll probably put the first shovel in the ground or knock down the first brick sometime around the first of the year, January or February timeline. This group of 5th graders, if all goes well, should be the ones that walk in to the finally finished brand new school, could be earlier.” Though the exact timeline is still uncertain, the school should open in the fall of 2017.

Those in the Gulfport School District zones will see the increase in their property taxes starting either in 2015 or 2016. The taxes will increase $39.20 per $100,000 for the duration of the 20 year bond.
