The Gulfport City Council voted Tuesday to allow an indoor shooting range on Seaway Road. The council echoed concerns of Gulfport citizens about disturbing noise in the neighborhood, but the range developer, David Comstock, explained the layers of noise buffer. He also emphasized that a retail store will be built above the range, therefore neighbors have nothing to worry about. Comstock says this range will be a serious economic boost for the city.
He says, “I think it'll be huge. Gulfport has lost a lot of retail. We will have a real fine retail facility inside the range, over 3,000 square feet, and then with the training to go along with it. It'll just be great from a sales tax standpoint for the city.” Comstock says license and zoning issues have delayed them, but now they'll be ready to open their doors in six to eight months. He says the facility will provide 24 jobs for locals and also help the local police department. Comstock says Gulfport Police officers will be able to get free training at the range, furthering the benefits of the location.
