This weekend, the Mississippi Gulf Coast had the honor to host the 77th Fire Chiefs and Firefighter Conference in Gulfport. Friday, the Fire Chief Association Convention took place, where they discussed similar successes and problems each station faces. The fire departments discuss possible state legislation they would like to see passed to help certain issues. Issues discussed this year ranged from budget cuts and the amount of personnel, to death benefits.
Hank Levins, Deputy Chief of the Gulfport Fire Department, says, “We have a pretty good impact for the City of Gulfport. It gives us an opportunity to showcase what we have here. Our events are gonna’ be at the hotel we’re at now, the beach front, Jones Park is where we'll have the banquets. So it gives us an opportunity to bring everyone from around the state together and showcase our own city.” The event is also a good way for vendors to show off the latest firefighting equipment.
