Yet another step in the Biloxi baseball process has been completed. Tuesday, the officials over the project announced the name of the General Manager for the team. News 25 was there for the announcement. The Huntsville Stars should be calling Biloxi home next year, and their General Manager will be coming with them. Tuesday, Buck Rogers was announced as the General Manager of the future Biloxi team.
Ken Young, President of Biloxi Baseball, says, "This is a beginning for the operations of this baseball team." The 18 year minor league executive has a personal tie to the Coast. Buck says, “I met my wife about a mile down the road in 1986.” Buck's wife, Babs, is a Gulfport native and Harrison Central graduate, making it a homecoming for the family. Rogers says, “To be able to move here now and call it home and change out those Alabama license plates and not hear Roll Tide again is probably a good thing.”
Barry Lyons says, former M.L.B. player, says, “I know the ownership group went to great lengths to find the right guy and the right fit.” It just so happens that the Hunstville General Manager is the one chosen to travel with the team to Biloxi. After Rogers, along with other general managers were interviewed. The only mystery left is the name of the team.
Tim Bennett, co-owner of Biloxi Baseball, says, “We have absolutely no idea, but what we will say is May 1st or 2nd more than likely, or sometime in the next ten days or so, we'll have a name the team contest. We'll let everyone else weigh in on what they think the name should be.” Once the contest starts, people can submit possible names on baseballbiloxi.com. Young also says, “We'll be looking for something that's fun, that connotes the area.” Also at the top of the to-do list is completing construction of the stadium itself.
Bennett closes, "At this point, the way work has been progressing, I have every reason to believe we'll be playing on schedule probably this time next year, on the 20th or the 21st."
