Janaya Thompson, 5, was found dead in a trailer on Whitney Road Thursday. News 25 was live on the scene of the crime with an update about the victim's family. It was a somber scene, just as it was when the coroner broke the news to Janaya’s family.

Over 100 people gathered at the scene earlier in support and to help this family get through this tragic event. It's the worst news any parent could hear. Jarmal Thompson has learned he has lost his only child, five year old, Janaya Thompson. Thompson says, “I'm upset because I lost my best friend today, and how the situation is...I'm pretty much knowing what happened and that's what's upsetting me.”

According to Thompson, a heavyset, bearded, white male who lives in the Palms Apartment Complex where Janaya lived, showed a lot of interest in the search for Janaya last night. Thompson says the man picked him up in a car around 12:30 Wednesday night, and drove him around in search of his daughter. Thompson says neighbors saw the same man early Thursday morning, with a small bite mark and scratches on his arm. The man is now nowhere to be found.

Although police have not named any suspects, Thompson believes this man was involved. Thompson also says, “He basically just knew my daughter's everyday life. I didn't pay it no mind. It didn't catch my attention until the bite marks and the scratches were brought to my attention.”

Police have been working since late Wednesday night and will continue their investigation until they uncover what happened to Janaya. While appreciative of law enforcement's efforts, Thompson wishes more was done. He says, “They let the suspect go. They were a big help, you let the perp go, but I really appreciate what they did. Hopefully they could take justice to his court.”

Justice is what Thompson now hopes for, while his family gets through the nightmare of losing their only child. Thompson closes, “I'm holding up pretty good, all for the benefit of her mom, because she is hospitalized right now. One of us has to be strong. I'm not taking it that well, but I do have to stay strong.”

News 25 would like to send out hopes and prayers to Janaya Thompson's family at this time. The family and community hope the investigation will bring some sort of justice to the tragic events that have befallen this family.
