According to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (M.D.M.R.), July's red snapper fishing weekends are a bust.
In hopes of combatting the short nine day season this year, the M.D.M.R. allowed anglers to harvest red snapper in state waters every weekend in July, asking fishermen to participate in the agency's red snapper reporting program, but according to the numbers, fishermen are not taking advantage of the extra time.
Wesley Devers, a Marine Fisheries scientist, says, “We got fairly decent responses in the federal June season, but we kind of expected the same thing because we had so much input from people wanting to snapper fish, and the lack of responses both electronically and mail-in have been very disappointing.”
The nine miles of Mississppi waters will still be open for the next two weekends in July for red snapper fishing.
