GULFPORT—The Gulf Coast shipbuilders announced their endorsement for Thad Cochran in the runoff election on June 24. Senator Cochran was in Gulfport for the day to thank the shipbuilders for their support.
CEO of the Gulf Coast Shipyard Group, John Dane III, said, “I’m concerned his opponent, another lawyer, is not what we need at this time.”
If reelected, Cochran will be a shoe-in to become leader of the U.S. Senate’s Appropriations Committee. He’ll then be able to direct government money into Mississippi’s top industries.
Shipbuilding companies, like Gulf Coast Shipyard Group, believe Cochran’s position will help secure jobs and stimulate business on the Coast.
Dane said, “I think that the senator, with his leadership position and seniority, will be the best one to help move Mississippi forward, and assist in keeping a strong military, and supporting businesses along the Coast.”
Early morning on Friday, June 13, Senator Cochran visited Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula and made his way to Gulfport later in the day to thank the shipbuilders for their support.
“I hope my experience can be used and I’ll make it my every effort to be used successfully to help you improve the quality of life for your family and friends and children,” said Cochran.
According to Dane, the most important message of the day was to encourage citizens to vote.
Dane said, “We just want to make sure everyone gets out the vote, and we wanted an opportunity for the senator to get his message across to all the workers and subcontractors we have here at Gulf Coast Shipyard Group.”
Cochran closed his visit expressing his thanks, “Thank you very much for coming out and thank you for what you do. I hope you’ll vote for me next Tuesday. Thank you.”
The runoff election against Tea Party candidate Chris McDaniel is Tuesday, June 24. Chris McDaniel’s campaign is scheduled to arrive in Hattiesburg at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14. Former presidential candidate and U.S. Representative Ron Paul is expected to endorse McDaniel at the event.
