A major basketball tournament is coming to Coast this weekend. Wednesday, the floors are being laid down for the Gulf Coast Hoops Fest. The tournament will be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in conjunction with the Crawfish Music Festival. About 120 high school boys basketball teams from around the country will be playing. The tournament is an N.C.A.A. certified event. Coaches from over 100 college teams will be present to evaluate the players and scout out promising athletes.
Rob Engeman, the C.E.O. of Elevate Hoops, says, “Help kids, to help kids to get that exposure. That's why we moved inside the convention center, to have all these floors under one roof. It’s just easier for ’the college coaches. They don't have to drive all over creation to different high schools, one gym here, one gym there.” There will be over 1,000 boys participating in the tournament. The event is expected to have an economic impact of about half a million dollars here on the Gulf Coast.
