The body of a 5 year old Gulfport girl who went missing Wednesday night has been recovered by police at an abandoned trailer on Whitney Road. Janaya Thompson went missing around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Gulfport Police partnered with search units from all over the state and recovered her body at 8:45 a.m. at 14475 Whitney Road in the bathroom of the trailer.
A Gulf Coast search and rescue canine picked up the scent off of Janaya's t-shirt and led police to her body. The police are continuing to investigate what happened to Janaya and are treating the case as a homicide. Gary Hargrove, the Harrison County Coroner, says, “Any death in Harrison County is treated as a homicide and as we work through the case, get the autopsy done, get that information, then we will work our way back. If we need to scale it back down to something else we will, but right now as it stands, it's being investigated as a homicide by all departments.”
Leonard Papania, the Gulfport Police Chief, says, “We are going into the next phase of that investigation. I ask that you all be patient with our release of information. This is not a story, this is a tragedy.”
Sgt. Damon McDaniel, the Gulfport Police Public Information Officer, says, “We are looking into any information that we receive that will also be a vital piece of information that will aid in the investigation. Once again, this investigation is ongoing.”
