The Mississippi Economic Council sponsors a Tech Master program under the Mississippi Scholars Initiative. The program recognizes high school students that fulfilled standards for technical jobs. The standards were set by Ingalls Shipbuilding, Toyota, and other state business leaders that agreed on what they would want in future applicants. Irwin Edenzon, the President of Ingalls Shipbuilding, says, “Our H.R. Department would put a star on your file, so if you apply and you've been through the Tech Master program, you'll be in the preferred file and you have a better opportunity to work here because we would know you have all the material we need and we won’t have to do it again.” The Tech Master track is a vocational alternative to the academic track, which prepares students for college.
