Some good news for veterans in Gulfport: the American Legion Post 119 has finally found a new home since Hurricane Katrina. The post is renovating offices on Ashley Road in north Gulfport to become a social gathering place for veterans. The facility will be equipped with a meeting room, kitchen and bar area, along with a full time resource officer to help with paper work. Post Commander, Brian McDowell, hopes to give back to the community as well.

McDowell says, “In a perfect world and perfect model, I’d like to see us as a social meeting hall for veterans, a support hall for veterans with a full service officer, capable to write grants for child welfare, disaster relief, and college scholarships.” McDowell plans for the new post to open in late August or early September.
