Tax Day TEA Party Rally
The Mississippi Gulf Coast will host a Tax Day TEA Party Rally Wednesday, April 15, in conjunction with a nation-wide grassroots movement that is aimed at protecting Constitutional rights.

The Coast’s TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party Rally will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 15 at the Gulfport Sportsplex just off I-10 at the Canal Rd. exit.

TEA Parties across the nation are drawing large crowds and drawing attention to free-market principles and the United States Constitution.

The rally will feature speakers and open microphones for audience participation. Concession stands will be open and there is no admission charge, however donations will be accepted to help pay for the cost of the event. It is suggested that attendees bring lawn chairs.

The Tax Day TEA Party Rally movement began in early 2009 when Rick Santelli, the On Air Editor for CNBC, called for a "Chicago tea party" (reminiscent of the Boston Tea Party in 1773) where advocates of the free-market system could join in a peaceful protest against out-of-control government spending.

On February 27, 2009, an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the streets in over 40 cities across the country in the first nationwide "Tea Party" rallies. With April 15 being the deadline for filing taxes, grassroots organizers began scheduling and encouraging the second round of Tea Party rallies to coincide with the tax deadline.

Local organizers on the Mississippi Gulf Coast say that the event in Gulfport is strictly a local grassroots effort that was inspired by the first round of nationwide rallies. All planning and funding for the event are being done by local persons. While the rally will focus on current political issues, organizers are quick to point out that this is not a political rally.
