JACKSON, Miss.,- The 2008 Mississippi Tour Guide is now available from the Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division and the Mississippi Tourism Association. The new guide is filled with the most up-to-date information to help plan for travel in Mississippi.

Culture and heritage is the theme of the 2008 Mississippi Tour Guide. The cover features, An Oxford Sketchbook by Wyatt Waters. The painting shows Square Books, located on the historic Oxford Square. “Oxford’s depiction is in celebration of The University of Mississippi’s selection as the host of the first of three 2008 presidential debates,” stated Mississippi Development Authority Director of Tourism D. Craig Ray.

Within the guidebook you will be introduced to feature articles that encourage visitors to embrace Mississippi. In addition to Mississippi’s cultural claims, information will tempt readers to explore Mississippi’s great outdoors, visit the state’s idyllic small towns, eat the local cuisine and play our award winning golf courses. Music and history lovers will gather ideas for heritage tours from a feature on the new Blues Trail.

The guide provides lodging alternatives, including bed and breakfast inns, resorts, hotels and campgrounds as well as dining options. Sample itineraries are included and local contact information is provided.

Follow your passion in 2008 and take the most exciting vacation ever in your life … in Mississippi. The tour guide is free and may be ordered by calling 1-866-SEE-MISS, by visiting a Mississippi Welcome Center or the web at www.visitmississippi.org.

Park Cleanup

The Gulf Coast Conservation Corps (a branch of AmeriCorps) is planning a park cleanup on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 1:00pm in the 30th Street Park. The purpose of this event is to promote the dream of Dr. King by building broad and diverse coalitions, breaking down barriers and make the community the best that it can be.

Would you like to help us make a difference? We need people like you to donate time, energy, and experience. Instead of making this a day off make it a day of service, by volunteering. Assist us in making this park a clean and safe environment for the youth of this community. We will also have a 40 days of Nonviolence booth where individuals can pledge 40 days of nonviolence. The 40 days of nonviolence booth is significant because it has been 40 years since the tragic death of Dr. King, and this is to remember his stand for nonviolence. We are asking people to pledge 40days of nonviolence which will begin in the home and then it can spread throughout the community.

In addition to the park clean up on MLK Day, AmeriCorps members are also planning to place a bench in the park as a symbol of the stand that Rosa Parks made by not giving up her seat. This historic event was actually the launching pad to Dr. King’s fight for civil rights.

Together, we will be able to help our community and continue to make the dream of Dr. King a reality. There will be a diverse group of individuals working together in the park. So we ask you to come and join us as we remember a man who believed that one day we would all forget about our race, color, creed, and religion and live out the meaning that “all men are created equal”.

Lunch or a snack will be served to the volunteers after the park clean up. My contact information is listed below. Please call us today at 228-806-4896 to find out more about how you can help, or visit our Web site at www.mlkday.gov.

Thank you
